NOOL: Where a New Beginning Starts With Something Small

What if you could offer someone the chance to start over? Not through grand gestures, but through something as simple as a dress, a set of dishes, or a pair of shoes.

For a survivor of violence rebuilding life after trauma, these everyday items carry a quiet kind of power. They help someone feel seen. They remind them that they are valued. They offer proof that a supportive community stands beside them as they take each step forward.

That’s the heart of NOOL, our thrift store initiative - a place built not just to meet needs, but to hold dignity at its centre.

A Space Designed With Care

Step inside NOOL, and you will notice it immediately: the space feels warm, calm, and thoughtfully arranged. Every corner is intentional. Every item on the shelf has been chosen with care.

Since opening in 2022, NOOL has grown into more than a store. It’s a space where survivors can rediscover confidence, choose what they need freely, and shape their own next chapter.

What Makes NOOL Different

NOOL isn’t a charity counter. It isn’t a room where people stand in line and wait to be handed what’s left. It’s a true shopping experience.

Clothes are neatly displayed, just like in a mall. Kitchenware, bedding, and household items sit arranged on shelves where survivors can browse at their own rhythm. There’s no rush. No pressure. Just a safe, supportive space designed to honour choice.

Survivors find:

  • Clothing for every moment –  everyday wear, workwear, and outfits for occasions that matter.
  • Household essentials -from utensils and towels to small furniture and personal care items, for those setting up a new home.
  • A sense of autonomy – the freedom to pick, choose, and try things on, like any shopper would.

Supportive guidance – our team helps only when asked, ensuring the experience stays empowering, not overwhelming.

Why This Work Matters

Starting over after violence is never a single moment. It’s many small steps, finding safety, settling into a new space, learning to trust again, rediscovering a sense of self.

Access to essentials may seem straightforward, almost ordinary. But in reality, it removes a heavy weight. It lets survivors move forward without the added worry of how to manage daily needs. It reminds them that rebuilding is possible, that they deserve comfort, and that their choices matter.

At NOOL, dignity isn’t offered as a gesture, it’s woven into the entire experience. A survivor picks out a warm coat. A set of plates for their new kitchen. A saree for an interview. These moments may look small from the outside, but inside them is the strength of someone reclaiming their life on their own terms.

And that’s the quiet power of NOOL: every item carries the possibility of a new beginning.
